Elina Koivisto

Biography

Elina Koivisto (M.Sc.) and Maiju Suomi (M.Sc.) are architects and doctoral researchers at Aalto ARTS. Through their practice and research they explore and strech the boundaries of architecture. They create enjoyable living environments for both humans and non human beings and study societal questions and values through multisensory spatial experiences. In her practice-led research in the Empirica Research Group at the Department of Design, Maiju Suomi exploers how moving beyond a human-centered world-view affects architectural practice. Elina Koivisto in her practice-led research at AREA Doctoral School and Department of Architecture investigates, how a more caring approach together with human and non-human co-collaborators could change our relations with the space and matter.

Kudos - Library of Material Relations, conceptualised as part of Elina Koivisto’s doctoral dissertation at the AREA Doctoral School, is an exploration into caring relations in architecture and into dissolving the border of matter and living beings. It offers its visitors a chance to experience a space built together with other living beings and to re-evaluate the material relations in our built environment in general. The project frames architecture as an ever becoming and evolving process rather than an object frozen in time and place. Making of Kudos was shared with various groups of people. Each human visitor and more-than-human element molds the space with their presence. All main materials were sourced in the Aalto University campus area. This is the third iteration of Kudos - Library of Material Relations. It is designed to be dismantled and rebuilt in new locations with new local material relations added to the library.
