Alexia Coville
Biography
Alexia Coville is a German-French multidisciplinary researcher, writer and artist with a background in art history and cultural theory. Her academic work is situated at the intersection of naturecultures, art, architecture, sustainability, film, media, psycholinguistics and identity. Before moving to Finland, she spent multiple years travelling across Europe in a van with her partner and cat. Her studies and travels have propelled the development of a multidisciplinary artistic research practice. From analysing representations of urban human-animal relationships in nature documentary film to multimedial interactive installations, her work addresses and questions hegemonic attitudes toward human and non-humans.

‘Aire de Toilette’ resonates deeply with Alexia's artistic research, which is primarily concerned with naturecultures and human-animal relationships, exploring the intimate connections we make with our (living) environment. In her work she aims to expose and question human (cultural) assumptions about the non-human world. In addition to a strong affinity for philosophy, psychology and cultural theory, her method builds on vulnerability, empathy, and connection as a foundation of her explorations. In this way, her practice is taken by various theoretical currents and dives headfirst into whimsical rabbit holes to follow the streams of natureculture entanglements. ‘Aire de Toilette’ challenges our conceptions of inter-species propriety and compels us to recognise animal agency, emotions and connections.
