Concert: Afro-Indigenous Music of Resistance.

Symposium participation

This artistic project is closely connected to Ivan Chaparro’s practice-based research at Aalto, where he is a doctoral researcher in the Department of Art and Media. His research explores the intersection of climate justice activism and epistemic justice for activists.

Through TXAP, Ivan examines the correlation between music, storytelling, and dance, with a focus on the performative and activist dimensions of Black Atlantic music genres such as Cumbia, Blues, Hip Hop, Reggae, Funk, and Salsa. His work emphasizes how these musical forms have historically served as instruments of resistance in Africa and the Americas, playing a crucial role in defending nature, community well-being, and fostering utopian visions and resilience.

During the concert, Ivan offers a space for dancing and rhythmic interaction, interwoven with historical narratives about music and activist struggles in the Global South. The performance is presented through the lens of communal joy as a form of collective care and resistance.
